I wanted to include a section on here for just general life updates. Don’t worry, they will all still be mostly related to my journey to be debt free and financially independent. But most of my posts and videos are themed around a particular topic, and sometimes it’s just nice to have a chat. Think of this like a getting out of debt, becoming financially independent diary… 🙂
I got into debt when I was 21 years old. I got my first professional finance job at 20, and when I turned 21 I realised I could afford to get a loan. So I did… I stupidly didn’t really think when the bank said “hey, Anna – you can get a cheaper interest rate when you take out a bigger loan”. Of course, I went for it.
And lo’ and behold, I have been in debt ever since. It was like a gateway debt ! I kept adding more onto the loan, which resulted in higher interest rates, getting credit cards and all sorts. I was a typical young girl who loved shopping and didn’t think much about my future. It just seemed like the normal thing to do – shop. Have lots of things.
It was always just “one more thing, then I’ll never do another loan”. Add onto that just over one years’ worth of university fees and a higher than expected deposit for my flat mortgage and I had in total about £50k of debt. C-R-A-Z-Y!
I started to get wiser as I got older, and initially decided to tackle my student loan. Once I had done that, I got a taste for paying off debt. I then went through a bit of a nervous breakdown in the summer of 2019, and everything changed. I went to spend a month in Poland with my family, and I decided that I didn’t want to spend my whole life far away from my family and stressing about numbers on a spreadsheet, just so I can consume lots of pointless stuff like clothes. I decided I wanted to move back to Poland and be with my family.
Then, I discovered the FIRE movement and – excuse the pun – a fire was started inside me! I started hustling so much for extra money, to pay off the debt as quickly as possible and move towards my goals. I paid off £25k of debt in just 11 months (see – How To Pay Down Debt Fast).
Since then, I’ve been learning to invest to make my money work for me and I’ve carried on hustling as even though my debts might be almost paid off ( I have a bit of 0% interest debt left!), any additional money I earn on the side just gets me closer to my goal.
What is that goal, you may ask? Well, I aim to build a house in Poland (I purchased the land last year), and become financially independent enough to have enough income to cover my living costs in Poland from passive income. That will mean I can move there and focus on doing work I enjoy – work because I want to, not because I have to.
I truly believe the reason I enjoy my side hustles so much is because I don’t have to do them! No pressure, no stress. I know that if I wanted to, I could walk out and not worry.
So yes – that is my plan. That is my journey. I will be logging everything on this blog – my youtube videos will be written out as articles too, but the blog part of this (under the “ramblings” category) will just purely be me talking about my journey and my thoughts.
Hope it helps someone else get motivated 🙂
